Whether you are backing up your files locally with a hard drive or a USB Flash Drive or via the cloud, I recommend encrypting them for your security.
There are many free file encryption packages and many paid packages. The free one I prefer is 7-zip. It is excellent for compressing files for emails & the web. It also can password protect and Encrypt them with AES 256 security, which is an excellent, if not bulletproof way to protect your files.

There are more powerful and easier to use paid packages available, but for a free package, it is hard to beat. There are also many add-on packages available to make it perform specific tasks. And many of them are also free.
